The SEC and Big Ten just banned NFL players from returning to college. The lawsuits start today.

I start teaching today. And the subject matter writing itself in real time couldn't be more perfect.

Yesterday, the SEC and Big Ten both announced bans prohibiting players who signed NFL contracts — or appeared on NFL rosters — from returning to play college football. The Big Ten goes further: any school that allows such a player to compete faces a fine and its coach gets suspended for 50% of the season.

This is a direct response to Dae'Quan Wright, the Browns tight end who asked to be cut and is trying to join LSU under a Louisiana court order. And it puts LSU — an SEC school — in an impossible position.

Here's what I actually think is going on: the NCAA knew lawsuits were coming when they excluded the class of 2022. The conferences knew lawsuits were coming when they announced these bans yesterday. Maybe — just maybe — the goal is to create so much chaos that Congress has no choice but to pass the Protect College Sports Act in September.
