Now — Tony Romo. Arrested July 23rd in Wisconsin for OWI, driving back from a golf tournament. Body cam footage went everywhere. CBS put him on leave "until further notice" and named JJ Watt as his replacement alongside Jim Nantz.
The question everyone's asking is whether CBS is trying to use this to get out of a contract worth tens of millions. My read: this is an opening offer. They're saying "we owe you zero." Romo's people are going to say "you can get out, but we want everything." Then come the lawyers and the negotiations.
A first-offense OWI in Wisconsin is a civil traffic infraction — not a criminal charge. Using that to void a major media contract via a morals clause is a reach. If CBS pushes this, I think it's for reasons that go well beyond one incident. Today I'm breaking down what those reasons might be — and how this plays out.
