Welcome to the Sunday 7…
Smarter About Sports is in the top 5 on Amazon for sports books. Genuinely grateful. If you've read it and haven't left a review yet — it would mean a lot. Get it here
This week the Packers released their annual financials — the only team in the league required to do so — and one number tells you everything about what a business the NFL really is. Every team, all 32, receives $453 million from the league before turning the lights on. The salary cap is $280 million. Do the math. I'll do it for you inside.
The Protect College Sports Act had a wild week. The Big Ten and SEC were ready to kill it. President Trump got involved. Cruz and Cantwell held the line. By Friday night, both conferences signed on. The bill now heads to the Senate floor with a real shot before recess. I'll explain what's actually in it — and the question nobody is asking about the $48.8 million cap.
Ohio State and Notre Dame both landed jersey patch deals worth $17-20 million a year. Chris Olave broke the $30 million annual average barrier for wide receivers. And Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson are doing hold-ins at training camp — because they've watched what happened to Brandon Aiyuk and they know running backs can't wait.
This week's Sunday 7:
The Packers financials — and the $453 million number every NFL fan needs to understand
The Packers' financial future — and why the doom talk needs to stop
The Protect College Sports Act — what's in it, what happened this week, and my real question about the cap
Ohio State, Notre Dame, and the jersey patch gold rush
Gibbs, Robinson, and why running backs can't afford to wait
