For about 12 hours in 2006, Adam Vinatieri was going to be a Green Bay Packer.

I was in Canton this weekend for Adam Vinatieri's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame — the third kicker ever inducted. I represented Adam from 1996 to 1999, when he was an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State making his way onto the New England Patriots roster.

There were also about 50 former Colts there Saturday night — including Andrew Luck and my former client Matt Hasselbeck. It was a great evening.

And it brought me back to the story I've told a few times now — including in Smarter About Sports — about how close he came to ending up in Green Bay instead of Indianapolis.

I was with the Packers in 2006 when Adam hit free agency. We'd just lost Ryan Longwell to the Vikings. We needed a kicker. I brought Adam in quietly — stealth visit, no one knew. We had dinner. I went to bed that night genuinely believing the Packers had Adam Vinatieri.

At 7am the next morning, my phone rang.
