Six days out from Smarter About Sports — and today's story from the book is a little lighter than the Favre one.

When I left the agent business for the Green Bay Packers, it was a full immersion. Supper clubs. Whole milk at every banquet, refilled constantly. Lambeau Field before the renovation — which, I'll be honest, looked like a high school stadium. Small offices. A city that was big enough for an NFL franchise but, as the Arena Football League commissioner told me directly, not big enough for an arena team.

And then there was the day I was at the beach with my son in our swim trunks, trying to complete a trade for the Packers, when my phone died. I walked up to a ranger station and tried to explain the situation. The ranger wasn't buying it.

Until I mentioned which player we were trading.

That's today's Daily Dose.
