Private Equity Just Entered College Football—And It’s Not Going Away

Utah becomes the latest school to spin off an LLC for private funding. Here’s why it matters—and what it signals for the future of college sports.

Hi, guys. Welcome to the Daily Dose for Friday, December 12th, 2025, as we get into the holiday season. Hope everyone's doing well. A couple more notes from college football in this Daily Dose that we have to talk about.

First of all, Utah enters the world of private equity, a group called Otro Capital out of New York. Actually know one of the guys. He was with the NFL for many years with the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, named Alex Shiner, as part of that group. And basically, they're investing in Utah athletics, but it's not coming in directly to the University of Utah. I think there's some issues with an educational state institution taking that kind of private equity money as a corporate investment.
