The Browns had to make the trade they did...
Inside today's Daily Dose
Hi guys, welcome to the Daily Dose. What an interesting first night of the Draft. I'm sure a lot of you watched it. I think probably 12 million people watch the reading of names by Roger Goodell. It's just amazing that the power the NFL has in media, where people get so invested in the Draft. So much to talk about. Obviously, our Packers that I was involved with so many years. We took a receiver in 2002 named Javon Walker. Packers next took a receiver in the first round in 2025, last night, Matthew Golden. So yeah, 23 drought between first-round receivers. A lot of second-round receivers in there that did really well, like Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, Jayden Reed. There's Christian Watson. There's a lot, so don't sleep on second-round receivers.
But speaking of receivers, I want to talk about Travis Hunter, the all-world receiver/defensive back. He was projected to be number 2 in the draft and was number 2, but not by the team that had the number two pick, the Cleveland Browns. They traded back to the Jacksonville Jaguars. And here's what I want to say. I've been hard on the Browns, right? Because the Deshaun Watson mess in terms of Draft capital, in terms of contract, probably the worst decision in the history of the NFL, right? You could say that. But I can't criticize him for this.
I know everyone wants the sexy Travis Hunter. Would have been so exciting, and everyone thinks he's going to be great, and he may be. But the haul that they got from moving back 3 picks, and I know it's at the top of the Draft, but moving back 3 picks, they netted the fifth pick overall, only three picks away from the second pick that they had; a second round pick this year; a fourth round pick this year; and the real prize, a first round pick next year. So, for moving back 3 picks, and I know they gave up, I think, a low-round pick as well, for moving round 3 picks, wow. A second, a fourth, and number one next year.
So, now they have one first-round pick, they just made it on Mason Graham, the defensive tackle from Michigan, and two next year for a team that did not have a first-round pick since 2021. They didn't have a first-round pick in '22, '23, and '24 based on Deshaun Watson. Now, that's over. They got their pick. They made their pick, and next year they have two already. And who knows how good Jacksonville will be? That's probably a prime pick.
So, if I'm Andrew Berry, the General Manager of the Browns, I'm like, yeah, you got to make that trade. I know everyone loves Travis Hunter, but the Browns aren't winning the title this year. The Jaguars aren't winning the title this year. Take the assets, and there's a lot of assets there, especially that number one pick next year that they can use towards whatever. Maybe it's the quarterback. Maybe that's how they play it next year. Maybe they take a quarterback tonight. Maybe it's Shedeur Sanders.
And speaking of him, what a disconnect between the way the media pundits saw Shedeur Sanders and the way everyone in the NFL sees him. We'll see if he's drafted tonight, probably will be. Maybe first pick in the second round to the Browns. But again, the disconnect, maybe it's because of affection for Deion, affection for the program, all the hype. But again, NFL general managers were never seeing Shedeur Sanders as a first-round pick, and I think there's a chance he's not even early in the second round. So, we'll see. But again, I am actually giving kudos to the Cleveland Browns for making that trade because it took a stupid offer, and they got one. It was an offer they could not refuse. Enjoy the rest of the Draft. Have a great weekend.
