The CBA expires December 1st. Owners want a salary cap. The union has never accepted one in 50 years. A lockout is coming. And the owners' central argument has always been competitive balance — the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees spend freely and everybody else has no chance.
Then this past Thursday, the first two teams to clinch playoff spots were the Milwaukee Brewers — baseball's smallest market, 19th in payroll — and the Tampa Bay Rays, fourth lowest payroll in the sport.
